Adult Education Brings Generational Change

Connie Flores never wanted to drop out of school, let alone leave in eighth grade. But like thousands of other teenagers who never graduate high school in New Mexico — a state with one of the highest dropout rates in the nation — Flores didn’t think she had a choice.

She’d been an A student in her early school years in Santa Clara, the small village near Silver City where she grew up.

“I loved school,” she says.

But when Flores reached fifth grade, she says her mother, an alcoholic, began to rage out of control. She alternately kicked Flores out of the house or disappeared on lengthy drinking sprees, leaving Flores in charge of her siblings.

Success Files Features Educate & Elevate with Host & Actor Rob Lowe

Educate & Elevate has been highlighted in “Success Files,” an award-winning program that highlights new stories and innovative concepts through groundbreaking documentary presentations. The program aired on PBS and was hosted by actor Rob Lowe.

The Educate & Elevate campaign story featured a short, six-minute documentary about the power and relevancy of adult education and reached over 148 million viewers.

Adult Education Leaders Urge Congress to Increase Funding by $100 Million to Put More Americans on Path to Social Mobility

As the U.S. House and Senate appropriations committees determine how to allocate new nondefense discretionary funds for fiscal year 2018, the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) and the National Council of State Directors of Adult Education (NCSDAE) urge Congress to direct $100 million to adult education to reach more of the 36 million Americans with low literacy, putting them on the path to social mobility and strengthening our nation’s workforce and economic vitality.
